Marcus Ziemer:

Marcus Ziemer returns for his 13th season as the head coach of the Sonoma State men's soccer program with a target on his back. After winning the National Championship in 2002, he knows teams will be aiming at his Seawolves as they prepare to defend their title.

Luckily, the Seawolves have a lot of talent coming back, headlined by Third Team All-American goalkeeper Matt Bernard, and a pair of juniors who received All-Region nods last year, Brandon Boone and Brian Coyne.

The 2002 squad finished the season 20-4 and held on for an incredible run to the title, defeating two teams in double overtime en route to the championship game. For his efforts, Ziemer was named CCAA, West Region and National Coach of the Year in '02.

A former two-time all-conference performer and team captain at Sonoma State during the mid-80's, Ziemer has compiled an outstanding 160-71-21 overall record during his 12 years at the helm. He is currently the 16th all-time winningest coach in Division II history (minimum of 10 years head coaching experience), as well as 16th among active coaches in winning percentage with a mark of .693. Ziemer has also seen his name break into the top 30 in career victories among all head coaches at Division II institutions.

Marcus began his coaching career in 1989 assisting then head coach Peter Reynaud with the men's squad. He was promoted to the head coaching slot before the 1991 season and celebrated a highly successful first year by leading his team to the NCAA championship game and by being named NCAC Coach of the Year, the first of two times he garnered that award.

In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge, and earned his USSF "A" license the following year.

A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years educating thousands of youth soccer players.

His coaching style has been described as intense and creative. "We try and move the ball a lot on offense, and play tough, hard-nosed defense," says Ziemer. "Our team plays a fast-paced, yet highly disciplined style of game."

A graduate of Sonoma State, Marcus is married to former SSU women's soccer star Trish Gretton. They have three children, Thomas, Taylor and Tera.
